New Course Introduces Nursing Students to Caring for People with Disabilities

Three RTC/IL staff members have contributed to the first comprehensive disability awareness course to be offered by the School of Nursing at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC).

Amanda Reichard, Dot Nary and Cat Howland created modules for the online graduate-level course “Caring for People with Disabilities,” which debuted in the spring 2012 semester.

Reichard contributed a module titled “The Intersection Between Disability and Chronic Disease”; Nary contributed  “Health Care Advocacy”; and Howland created “Snapshot for Health Care Personnel: The Unique Disaster-Related Needs of People with Disabilities.”

The course was developed by two disability programs at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The Disability and Health Program and the Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Program partnered with KUMC to offer the two-hour elective course.

Plans are in process to make this course and all its components available to any nursing school interested in this topic.
