What Are Accommodations?

Accommodations are supports that students with disabilities can get to help them succeed in school. Think of it as “leveling the playing field,” so that you can learn the way you learn best, and so that you can show your teachers what you have learned.

What do accommodations mean to you? Can you think of examples in which you or someone you know has received an accommodation? Did you know that these accommodations are now universal in our country? If you were unsure about how to answer these questions, that’s ok. You are going to find out!

When you finish this tutorial, you will be able to:

  • Identify federal disability legislation that has helped people with disabilities receive accommodations.
  • Tell the difference between reasonable and unreasonable accommodations.
  • Identify potential accommodations that would work for you.
