Grant Funding for OHSU-Researcher in Disability Measurement Consortium

LAWRENCE, KS. - The National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) has funded a five-year, $3 million grant to support a community study approach to identifying health care access roadblocks for people with disabilities by Charles Drum, an associate professor of Public Health and Prevention Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. 



Drum is a member of the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Measurement and Interdependence in Community Living (RTC/MICL) consortium that extends a cross discipline approach to exploring the effect of measurement on the societal participation of people with disabilities. RTC/MICL includes scientists from Washington University, the University of Montana, Kansas University, and Cornell University.



The Community Engagement Initiative project led by Drum facilitates collaboration between local government, local disability groups, and a variety of community members to develop and support a plan to ease health care access. Drum has used this method in several Oregon communities. 

The consortium's research measurement approach involving people with disabilities investigates enhanced community participation, economic utility of policies and practices, and intervention approaches to remove or reduce community participation barriers. 

 

Drum, JD, Ph.D., is also the founding director of the Center on Community Accessibility(CCA) and co-director of the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Health and Wellness at the Oregon Institute on Disability & Development, Child Development and Rehabilitation Center.
