Biography —
Founder of the Research and Training Center on Independent Living in 1980, Jim Budde served as center director; authored 42 research publications and independent living intervention products; provided technical assistance to more than 100 CILs and disability organizations, policy makers, and federal/state agencies; and managed more than 25 disability-related projects and grants. In 2002, Budde became the center’s director emeritus and continues his involvement in the Independent Living field.
Budde also is past president of the American Association of University Affiliated Programs, the National Association of Independent Living, and the National Association of Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers from which he received the Lifetime Service Award. He co-founded the center for independent living in Lawrence, Kansas — Independence, Inc. — in 1968, and was a board member and officer of Independence, Inc., serving three terms as president.
